Sohail Naseer – February 5, 2019
“Din aur Dastan” are two novelettes by Intizar Hussain of which I have two totally different opinions. I suggest first you should read the second one if you want to read the better one. 1#DIN As being a blind fan of Intizar Hussain I really can’t pass any unbiased comment about his writings, till now I haven’t. But among these two novelettes, I cant praise the first one “Din”. Though it’s not a bad story and I wouldn’t have any problem considering it a decent one only if it wasn’t written by Intizar Hussain. I know I sound foolish saying this but this is how it is. His all other works are great because they are his work. They have his taste of words, they smell the fragrance of his pen, they represent his style, they have a ‘Nani Amma’ in them, and this story ‘Din’ doesn’t. It’s not of his stature. Though being a novelette it still has a treatment of a short story, the characters are not vivid and soon loose their charm. There are some things I liked in the story but I won’t mention them here as overall I didn’t like the story. 2#Dastan Unlike ‘Din’ second novelette ‘Dastan’ is a master piece. Having the Eastern Dastan tradition along with Western abstract realism, Intizar hussain has brought an story which will mesmerize the modern mind with the wonders of ancient tradition of Dastan. The story treats modern circumstances with ancient myth, creating an environment of reality and fantasy. The prose in the story is of fairytale’s with rhyming sentences and repeated phrases. This amalgam of magic and realism, east and west , modern and ancient creats another style of storytelling which is Intizar Hussain’s trademark. The theme of story is story itself. There is a storyteller in the story named ‘Hakim Ji’ who has such an obsession with Dastan that he believes stories as real events and rejects real events which though he witnessed with his eyes, as gossips. He tells the history of downfall of muslim rule mixing ancient mythic characters creating a illusion of reality. This what Dastan is, rather this is what fiction is, THE ILLUSION OF REALITY. The only true fiction is which makes you feel it’s not a fiction.
