“داستان گوئی” or a skill of telling tales was a tradition in old times when nights were long & people weren’t corrupted by these technological advancements. They gathered together at night fall & told tales to entertain themselves. ‘Alif Laila’ is one such instance but it is a long tale of 1000 nights told by “Shehrzaad” to King Sheheryar when she was married to him after he got into the habit of killing his wives every single night because he didn’t trust women. So, this was new to me since it was not discussed in Children’s Alif Laila. Hazaar Dastan by Intezar Hussain is the Urdu translation of Rathan Nath Nashir’s narration but I must say, it has so many Persian words & verses that distracted me a lot. However, the tales are interesting & you end up admiring the levels of imagination of these people. They kept weaving tales after tales, stories within stories & build characters solely upon their experiences along with a figment of their imagination. It is a perfect example of stating one point in 100 different ways. The characters range from kings, queens, princes, princesses, traders, sailors, fishermen, tailors, barbers, musicians, cunning individuals & so on. It talks of the world where money available to rich people or kings is infinite, where anything can happen to anyone, royals fell in love with slaves & vice versa, where witches, wizards & jinn frequently make appearances, where bad people are killed with one flick of the sword, where miracles happen, lovers do everything to attract attention of their beloved, where people fell heads over heels in love at first sight, where they keep crying buckets or fainting when their love is taken away & kings turns to paupers or paupers become kings. It discusses themes of charity, love, kindness, punishment, justice, betrayal, extramarital affairs, hatred, humanity, friendship, death, life lessons, skills, poetry, music, food, royalty, creativity, terms of trade, perils of the sea, benefits of traveling, weird occurrences, wars & almost all sorts of the matters of life. These stories are intense & must be read once.
