The vagabond writer, Mustansar Hussain Tarar needs no introduction. You may know and appreciate him as a traveler famous for his travelogues, a writer with his bold language, a playwright for national TV or as a TV host. It is common knowledge that he’s one of the fathering figures of modern urdu literature. His works providing our literature with a much needed backbone.
I’ve been a fan of Tarar Sb’s works from my early teens, ever since I picked up his Ullu Humarey Bhai Hain from my school library. But ive always loved his novels more than his travelogues. So for me this bind up of novels was nothing short of a treat.
The bind up consists of Bahaao, Raakh and Qurbat e Marg Main Muhabbat. Bahaao is the tale of a civilization, Raakh is about a nation and Qurbat is the story of an individual. The stories may appear seemingly unrelated, but they’re built on the same undertone. And that is the beauty of the bindup, how it quietly interweaves the Indus through every story, depicting it in its different eras. Technically speaking the bind up doesn’t have a single travelogus. But Tarar Sb’s love for traveling and the wanderer in him is evident in each of the three stories.
For those of you who haven’t read Tarar Sb’s works this will be a perfect introduction and the old fans are all in for a treat.
